Descriptions of Our Talks

These programs are offered at our nursery in 2008.  All programs are presented by owners Roger and Nancy Lindley.  Nancy Lindley is available to present these programs to your garden club or Master Gardener group, too.  Please contact her about scheduling and fees: info@GreatLakesRoses.com

Buck Roses from Iowa
Dr. Griffith Buck developed winter-hardy, disease-resistant roses with look of hybrid tea florist roses.  These nearly-mythical roses have achieved cult status among rose lovers.  Learn what makes them so special and how you can enjoy them in your garden.  Enjoy colorful slides of the over seventy varieties in our collection.  This program features the Buck roses at the Edsel & Eleanor Ford House in Grosse Pointe Shores.  Select from thousands of Buck roses available for sale at the nursery.  Sunday, May 25 at 1 pm; repeated Monday, May 26 (Memorial Day) at 11 am. 

Climbing Roses – Selection, Growing and Training
Come for a colorful slide lecture and garden tour.  Learn which climbers perform best in Michigan, how to care for them and some innovative ways to utilize climbers in the landscape.  Special emphasis and demonst; repeated Monday Sept 15ration of pruning and training techniques.  Sunday, May 11 (Mother's Day) at 1 pm; repeated Monday, May 12 at 11am and Sunday, Sept 14 at 1 pm; repeated Monday, Sept 15 at 11 am.

Herbs from Head to Toe
Welcome the knowledgeable and entertaining Coleen French of French Garden Creations for a special program.  Don't just look at your garden this summer ... put it to work!  Coleen will demonstrate many ways to use the roses and herbs you grow to make your own hair conditioner, eye cream, facial mask, skin toner, cuticle oil, foot powder and more.  Handsouts include the recipes and instructions.  Coleen will bring a large sleection of her scented personal care products to sell after her talk.  Her scented soap is our favorite.  One day only -- Sunday, July 13 at 1 pm.

Insect & Disease Control for Roses
Join us for a slide lecture and tour of our less-than-perfect garden as we reveal how to recognize and treat the common insect and disease problems of roses.  There's special emphasis on natural and cultural controls to prevent and eliminate problems.  Bring some "problem leaves" in a clear plastic bag for diagnosis and discussion.  Sunday, June 8 at 1 pm; repeated Monday, June 9 at 11 am.

Japanese Beetle Control
Just when your garden is looking great, the Japanese beetles invade!  No other rose pest incites such emotion. Learn their lifecycle and exciting new control techniques discovered by Michigan State Univ.  Join owner Roger Lindley as he demonstrates Japanese beetle control techniques we use at the nursery.  Sunday, July 6 at 1 pm; repeated Monday, July 7 at 11 am.

Pruning and Fertilizing Roses – A Garden Demonstration
Join us in the display garden for this popular demonstration of techniques for spring pruning and fertilizing of all types of roses – from the largest climbers to the most petite miniatures.  Late spring is the correct time of year to prune roses in Michigan.  Don’t start without taking this class!  Sunday, April 20 at 1 pm; repeated Monday, April 21 at 11 am; Sunday, April 27 at 1 pm; Monday, April 28 at 11 am.

Rose Planting Demonstration & Soil Preparation
We’ll start the program in the barn with a brief slide lecture of how to prepare a rose bed.  Then, you'll move to the garden to watch Roger dig and Nancy talk about how to plant potted and bare-root roses.  You can go home and confidently plant a new rose garden with selections from the extensive inventory at Great Lakes Roses.  Sunday, May 4 at 1 pm; repeated Monday, May 5 at 11 am.

Rose Propagation Workshop
A popular hands-on workshop conducted by owner Nancy Lindley, who shares details of several techniques for propagation.  Prepare and root roses from cuttings, taking home new baby roses in mini-greenhouses.  Propagate your own cuttings or take ones from any of the hundreds of non-patented roses at the nursery.  Bring your own bring pruners; all other items supplied in the propagation kit  Plan on 2-1/2 hours for the workshop.  This popular workshop will not be offered in the fall since summer is the ideal time to root roses.  Reservations requested; $25 material fee collected at the door.  Sunday, June 29 at 1 pm; repeated Monday, June 30 at 11 am; Sunday, Sept 7 at 1 pm; repeated Monday, Sept 8 at 11 am.

Rugged Rugosa Roses
Native to the cold regions of Korea, Japan and China, the rugosa hybrids are colorful, fragrant, disease resistant and extremely winter-hardy. This slide talk and garden tour highlights our favorite varieties, pruning, care and their unique qualities.  Sunday, June 22 at 1 pm; repeated Monday, June 23 at 11 am.

Seven Steps to Success with Roses
In a fast-paced slide program, Nancy shares the secrets to success she has learned in thirty years of growing roses.  By following her common sense approach, any gardener can enjoy spectacular roses.  This program is just 60 minutes long and popular with garden clubs. Monday, May 19 at 11 am; repeated Sunday, Sept 21 at 1 pm and Monday, Sept 22 at 11 am.

Shrub Roses
This diverse group of rugged, repeat blooming roses range from the shortest groundcovers to tall climbers.  Learn about the many types of shrub roses (Austin’s English roses, Buck shrubs, Canadian Explorers, Morden Parklands, Meidilands, Towne & Country, Knock Outs, Flower Carpets, etc) and how they can be used in your garden.  Special tips on selection, care and winterization are illustrated with colorful slides and a tour of our display garden.  Sunday, June 1 at 1 pm; repeated Monday, June 2 at 11 am

Winter Preparation for Roses
Get your roses ready for winter properly to insure healthy plants and lush blooms next year.  Come for one of our most popular programs.  We’ll start with slides in the barn and move into the garden for a winterizing demonstration.  Please dress for the weather. Sunday, Sept 28 at 1 pm, Monday, Sept 29 at 11 am; Sunday, Oct 5 at 1 pm, Monday Oct 6 at 11 am; Sunday, Oct 12 at 1 pm and Monday, Oct 13 at 11 am.

Yesterday’s Roses for Today’s Gardens
Discover the history and horticulture of the fragrant damasks found in the ruins of Pompeii, alba and gallica roses that were the namesakes for the "War of the Roses" and the apple-scented eglantine lauded by Shakespeare.  Colorful slides and roses in our extensive garden illustrate these time-tested beauties that thrive in Michigan.  Sunday, June 15 at 1 pm; repeated Monday, June 16 at 11 am.

Nancy Lindley Roses for Michigan Great Lakes Roses
Nancy Lindley, author of "Roses for Michigan" has been described as a "motivational speaker", encouraging everyone with a sunny garden to enjoy roses.

Biography for Nancy Lindley (speaker for most programs): Nancy and her husband, Roger, own Great Lakes Roses in Belleville, MI. She's an American Rose Society Consulting Rosarian and a Michigan State University Master Gardener.  She is the author of  Roses for Michigan (Lone Pine Publishing), and is a regular contributor to Michigan Gardener magazine.  Nancy is a gifted and energetic speaker.  Her programs have been described as "motivational talks".

Roger Lindley is an American Rose Society Consulting Rosarian and a Michigan Certified Pesticide Applicator.  He is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the nursery and gardens.  He uses gentle humor when sharing insights and solutions from his many decades of rose gardening.

We offer informative and entertaining programs on Sundays at 1 pm, repeated Mondays at 11 am from mid-April through July 13 and Sept 7 through Oct 13 .  Except for the Rose Propagation Workshops, programs are free and no reservations are needed

Programs last for about 1-1/2 hours and are conducted in our unheated barn or garden.  We never cancel due to weather and have conducted rose pruning demonstrations in the snow.  Please dress for the weather and bring an umbrella if it’s raining, snowing or hot and sunny.
