Buck Roses from Iowa Dr. Griffith Buck developed winter-hardy, disease-resistant roses with look of hybrid tea florist roses. These nearly-mythical roses have achieved cult status among rose lovers. Learn what makes them so special and how you can enjoy them in your garden. Enjoy colorful slides of the over seventy varieties in our collection. This program features the Buck roses at the Edsel & Eleanor Ford House in Grosse Pointe Shores. Select from thousands of Buck roses available for sale at the nursery. Climbing Roses – Selection, Growing and Training Come for a colorful slide lecture and garden tour. Learn which climbers perform best in Michigan, how to care for them and some innovative ways to utilize climbers in the landscape. Special emphasis and demonst; repeated Monday Sept 15ration of pruning and training techniques. Herbs from Head to Toe Welcome the knowledgeable and entertaining Coleen French of French Garden Creations for a special program. Don't just look at your garden this summer ... put it to work! Coleen will demonstrate many ways to use the roses and herbs you grow to make your own hair conditioner, eye cream, facial mask, skin toner, cuticle oil, foot powder and more. Handsouts include the recipes and instructions. Coleen will bring a large sleection of her scented personal care products to sell after her talk. Her scented soap is our favorite. Insect & Disease Control for Roses Join us for a slide lecture and tour of our less-than-perfect garden as we reveal how to recognize and treat the common insect and disease problems of roses. There's special emphasis on natural and cultural controls to prevent and eliminate problems. Bring some "problem leaves" in a clear plastic bag for diagnosis and discussion. Japanese Beetle Control Just when your garden is looking great, the Japanese beetles invade! No other rose pest incites such emotion. Learn their lifecycle and exciting new control techniques discovered by Michigan State Univ. Join owner Roger Lindley as he demonstrates Japanese beetle control techniques we use at the nursery. Pruning and Fertilizing Roses – A Garden Demonstration Join us in the display garden for this popular demonstration of techniques for spring pruning and fertilizing of all types of roses – from the largest climbers to the most petite miniatures. Late spring is the correct time of year to prune roses in Michigan. Don’t start without taking this class! Rose Planting Demonstration & Soil Preparation We’ll start the program in the barn with a brief slide lecture of how to prepare a rose bed. Then, you'll move to the garden to watch Roger dig and Nancy talk about how to plant potted and bare-root roses. You can go home and confidently plant a new rose garden with selections from the extensive inventory at Great Lakes Roses. Sunday, May 4 at 1 pm; repeated Monday, May 5 at 11 am.
Rose Propagation Workshop A popular hands-on workshop conducted by owner Nancy Lindley, who shares details of several techniques for propagation. Prepare and root roses from cuttings, taking home new baby roses in mini-greenhouses. Propagate your own cuttings or take ones from any of the hundreds of non-patented roses at the nursery. Bring your own bring pruners; all other items supplied in the propagation kit Plan on 2-1/2 hours for the workshop. This popular workshop will not be offered in the fall since summer is the ideal time to root roses. Reservations requested; $25 material fee collected at the door. Rugged Rugosa Roses Native to the cold regions of Korea, Japan and China, the rugosa hybrids are colorful, fragrant, disease resistant and extremely winter-hardy. This slide talk and garden tour highlights our favorite varieties, pruning, care and their unique qualities. Sunday, June 22 at 1 pm; repeated Monday, June 23 at 11 am.
Seven Steps to Success with Roses In a fast-paced slide program, Nancy shares the secrets to success she has learned in thirty years of growing roses. By following her common sense approach, any gardener can enjoy spectacular roses. This program is just 60 minutes long and popular with garden clubs. Shrub Roses This diverse group of rugged, repeat blooming roses range from the shortest groundcovers to tall climbers. Learn about the many types of shrub roses (Austin’s English roses, Buck shrubs, Canadian Explorers, Morden Parklands, Meidilands, Towne & Country, Knock Outs, Flower Carpets, etc) and how they can be used in your garden. Winter Preparation for Roses Get your roses ready for winter properly to insure healthy plants and lush blooms next year. Come for one of our most popular programs. We’ll start with slides in the barn and move into the garden for a winterizing demonstration. Please dress for the weather. Yesterday’s Roses for Today’s Gardens Discover the history and horticulture of the fragrant damasks found in the ruins of Pompeii, alba and gallica roses that were the namesakes for the "War of the Roses" and the apple-scented eglantine lauded by Shakespeare.
